Behind this text: Above: the sample world, The Shattered Coast. Open a pin to read its lore.

Generate a world from a seed

The fastest way in. Pick a seed, a land shape and a climate, and Orbis Scriptor draws you a world:

  • a terrain map with coasts, rivers and biomes;
  • settlements, roads and names;
  • kingdoms with rulers, dynasties, wars and short lore entries.

Everything it makes is ordinary, editable content: a starting point, not a cage. The same seed always gives the same world.

Lore that links itself

Write in a clean editor and type [[ to mention any character, place or faction, or create one on the spot.

Every page shows what mentions it, so following a thread through your world is one click. Rename someone and every mention follows.

Queen Isolde — The Shattered Coast

Queen Isolde

royaltyhouse-vaelpov

Last of House Vael, Isolde took the Thorn Crown at Saltmarrow in the final winter of the Salt War.

Her first act as queen was to send word to

Queen Isolde’s page, with the pages that mention her.

Maps you can draw on

Import your own map image, or start from blank parchment or open ocean. Then:

  • drop pins that open the lore for that place;
  • draw rivers, roads, borders and kingdoms;
  • add labels that curve along rivers;
  • place map symbols: castles, cities, mountains, forests and more.

Layers, undo and PNG export come with it.

Timelines with your own calendars

Record events as single moments or long spans, and zoom from centuries down to single days.

Define calendars that fit your world: any months, weeks, eras and leap years. Switch calendars and the same moment reads correctly in each.

Frequently asked questions

Is it free?

Yes. Download it and use it, with no account and no subscription.

Do I need an account or internet?

No. Everything is stored in a folder you choose.

Where is my data?

In that folder: a database file, your images, and automatic daily backups.

Can I get my work out?

Yes. Export to Markdown (it opens in Obsidian) or print any page to PDF.

Can I bring my Obsidian notes in?

Yes. Links, tags and images come across.

Is there a Mac version?

Not currently. Orbis Scriptor runs on Windows and Linux.

Does this website track me?

No cookies and no third-party trackers. The server keeps a basic access log (your IP address, the page and the time) so problems and attacks can be spotted, and deletes it after about two weeks.

Can I share a world with my co-writer or players?

Not built in. You can share the folder or an export, but two people should not edit the same world at once.
